Low-Level Indication for XL2 Sound Level Meter

Low-Level Indication for XL2 Sound Level Meter

The XL2 Sound Level Meter now provides individual under-range indicators for both C- and Z-weighted sound levels. This new feature ensures increased confidence in measurement integrity while maintaining simplicity of measurement.

The XL2 supports high measurement accuracy with under-range indicators. These inform users, during low level measurements, that an alternative microphone with lower noise floor or higher sensitivity should be used. In the past the XL2 indicated when readings were below the linear measurement range for the A-weighted level in accordance with the standard IEC 61672. Now the instrument displays an under-range status also for individual levels with C or Z frequency weighting.

Flexible Percentile Sound Level Measurements

Flexible Percentile Sound Level Measurements

The statistical distribution of sound pressure levels is commonly used for environmental noise analysis, such as road traffic or community noise assessments. Now the XL2 allows you to measure any percentile level from 1% through to 99% as well as define the time and frequency weightings for the statistics.

The latest XL2 developments extend the level statistics functionality with variable settings from 1% through to 99% for each of the seven percentile levels. Thus the XL2 measures e.g. the percentile levels 5%, 33%, 50%, etc., - up to seven levels at the same time. Also, the time and frequency weightings for the broadband source are selectable; users may choose one of the frequency weightings A, C or Z and the time weighting Fast, Slow as well as Leq.

Successful cooperation between NTi Audio and Siemens Germany

Successful cooperation between NTi Audio and Siemens Germany

The Augsburg site of Siemens Germany is responsible for the technical safety of the Grundremmingen Nuclear Power Plant, the highest-output nuclear power station in Germany. Within a project lasting two years, the alarm system of the whole site was brought up to the latest technical standards. NTi Audio was selected as the partner for the conceptual design and realization of an automatic daily functional check of the alarm system.

The challenge
The components to test comprise about 4'000 loudspeakers spread over 250 loudspeaker lines, the corresponding 100 V audio amplifiers, different alarm signal generators as well as several control stations for speech announcements. Many of these components also have backups for redundancy. The daily test is executed at nighttime during regular operations. The goal is to reliably detect defective single loudspeakers, using a minimal test time, in order to be able to test all components within a reasonable time. Also, the test system must be integrated into the existing alarm system without any structural changes to the building.
